E.B.E

The truth is out there - but so are lies....

We begin in the skies of Iraq and a fighter pilot seeing a bright object that is not registering on his radar...and his base confirm that there are no objects on their radars either. The object disappears, but then re-appears closer to the plane, resulting in the fighter pilot firing and hitting the object, which plummets to the earth. This is observed by military staff at a NATO surveillance station on the Turkey/Iraq border, who proceed to check it out. We then switch to Route 100 in Tennessee, and a lorry driver experiencing radio interference and his lorry coming to an abrupt stop. As the driver gets out of the vehicle he sees what appears to be a large space craft hovering above him.....

At a Police Station in Lexington, Tennessee the truckdriver, Mr Ranheim, is being held. Mulder informs Scully that there have been multiple sightings of UFO's, but wants to know why the truck driver has been singled out. He wants the driver to elaborate on his encounter, although Scully believes that he is showing symptoms of Gulf War Syndrome. The investigators barely have time to ask any further questions before the local Police Chief enters the room and tells the agents that he will no longer co-operate with their investigation - and that the lorry driver was free to go...

Mulder is not happy with the scenario, and believes that someone got to the chief. He contacts an extreme group who have previously given him useful information, The Lone Gunmen, ardent conspiracy theorists, whom Scully describes as paranoid, delusional people. Mulder then turns to his informant, Deepthroat, who tells Mulder that he is 'being listened to by others' as well as providing Mulder with information. Scully meanwhile learns that the truck and Manheim were both bogus, and that whilst there was something in the truck it was not autoparts. She tells Mulder that Manheims real name is Frank Druce, and that he worked for special ops in Iraq. Mulder links the discovery of a wreckage in Iraq with Manheim, who would provide the perfect escort from Iraq to the US. Mulder feels that they must track the truck, and again meets Deepthroat, who tells him that seventeen UFO's had been spotted in one hour, and he also gives Mulder a picture of a UFO. He tells Mulder that the truck was in actual fact a decoy, although later Scully confirms that the photograph was a fake and that Mulder had been intentionally mislead by Deepthroat.

Mulder again meets and confronts Deepthroat, who responds by telling him that their lives are in danger when they speak and that he needed to divert Mulder as world reaction to the discovery could be dangerous. Mulder returns home and finds that his apartment is bugged, and so he and Scully decide to follow the original truck after losing their tails. They catch up with the truck in Washington State and follow it for hours - before it suddenly comes to a stop. Mulder and Scully run to the back of the lorry and climb into the trailer, only to find what appears to be an empty operating table. Mulder feels that they may have witnessed a rescue mission....

The next move for the agents is to visit an area that had witnessed seven sightings of UFO's over two nights, and after meeting a group of people wishing to welcome our extra terrestrial visitors the agents see manheim leaving a military base nearby. Mulder again contacts the Lone Gunmen, who manage to produce high level security passes for Mulder and Scully to enter the base. Once in the base they are soon foiled - but Mulder is determined to see the cargo and runs into the higher level security area - pursued by military personnel. He comes face to face with Deepthroat, who tells Mulder that 'it is dead, and that he was only one of three men to have met such a creature. It would appear that he was responsible for the extermination of the creature, and that his motivation in assisting Mulder was to atone for what he had done. Mulder leaves the facility....wondering which lie to believe.
