MIRACLE MAN

Samuel can heal you.....Samuel will heal you.....but only of you believe

It is 1983in Kenwood, Tennessee and we are witness to a fire with attending firemen rescuing people caught up in it. For one person however it is too late and he is removed in a  body bag. However a boy and what appears to be his father approach the body and undo the body bag - with the boy touching the dead mans hand. A fireman tells them that the man his dead - however after uttering a few religious words the mans hand moves....

Back in the present day Mulder and Scully watch what appears to be a young man healing a woman through the touch of his hand - Mulder reveals that the Reverend is Calvin Hartley and the boy, who appears to heal, is his adopted son Samuel. Hartley it appears claims to have found the boy on the banks of the Mississippi, and the boy is the main attraction in the Miracle Ministry, which has been performing miracles on a weekly basis for the past ten years. However they have had complaints about the practice, and the Kenwood County Sheriff believes that Hartley and his son have been running this scam for two long. Furthermore the Sheriff wants the FBI to prosecute them for murder - the tape shows Samuel touching a woman - 20 minutes later she is admitted to hospital - dead on arrival. The agents decide to make their way to Tennessee....

The agents turn up at the Miracle Ministry and hear Rev Hartley telling the gathering that Samuel will not be attending this evening....but he will return in two days. Leonard Vance, the man Samuel saved all of those years ago, is also a regular part of the religious entourage. Hartley tells Mulder that Samuel has disappeared, and that at the present time he is a troubled boy. The duo also meet Sheriff Daniel's, who reveals that there was no autopsy on the woman's body as it was blocked by the Ministry on religious grounds, and that the Police cannot find the boy either. They attempt to exhume the body in the aim of conducting an autopsy - however they are hindered by the ministry's followers and so abandon the mission. Instead the agents head into town and find Samuel at a local bar - he is drunk and been involved in a fight with the locals. He tells Mulder that he has muddied the river and as a result he has lost his gift. However before he is taken away by the Sheriff he tells Mulder that he can see his pain, and conjures up an image of Mulder's sister.

Samuel appears in Court the following day and bail is set at $100,000 - however the court is infested by locusts and it would appear to represent one of the great plagues. Mulder maintains that he thinks the kid is for real, suggesting that as well as conventional medicine the body can be seen as an electromagnetic system, and Samuel can repair the energy field, but he could possibly destroy the field in order to kill.

Samuel makes bail nonetheless and appears at the ministry later that day. He attempts to heal Margaret Hillman, who suffers from MS. However she dies and after some persuasion the parents agree to an autopsy. Scully finds that the female died from ingesting some form of arsenic, and with Samuel in jail Mulder goes down to see him and tell him he will be released. However it seems the Police have other ideas and put two heavyweights in with him - and eventually they beat Samuel to death.

Mulder meanwhile goes back to the Courthouse to investigate the locust swarm - and finds that they had been planted by someone else. It becomes clear that someone is attempting to discredit Samuel - and that person is Leonard Vance. He tells the agents that he killed those people - and that whilst he was saved by Samuel he did not want to survive - hideously burned he had no quality of life and blamed Samuel for this. The agents learn that Samuel has been killed, although stories suggest that Samuel has risen from the grave. As a final act Sheriff Daniel's is arrested in connection with the death of Samuel....
