A Return to Salems Lot

"You've come across the oldest race in humanity–protected by a

scepticism that say they don't exist....vampires."

A famous anthropologist is drawn away from his work studying a tribe, and told by his ex wife that their son Jeremy will either be sectioned or will have to live with his father. Joe decides to take his son to Salem, a place in which an old aunty had left him a house in her will. On the way he recalls how he had spent some time their with his aunt, and had met and fell in love with a 17 year old girl there before being whisked away from Salem before a relationship could bloom. However when they arrive it seems that all is not well, there appears to be hardly any residents and certainly no children, and they are not exactly greeted with open arms by the local police. As night falls we become aware as to why there were so few people in the day...people arise from coffins and go on a killing spree, looking for travelers, passers by and the children even prey on a couple of vagrants.

One such victim manages to make it to Joe's house, and both he and his son accompany her to Judge Axel's home, the head of the community. It isn't long before the girl is dragged off to be feasted upon, Jeremy goes of with a pale looking girl and Joe is getting a tour of a vampires haven. Indeed he is told that this community of vampires mostly drink cows blood rather than human, before being introduced to the girl he knew from his past, Kathy, who was quite obviously a vampire...yet this does not stop Joe taking her to bed.

He learns that the people who walk in the day are simply drones, humans who serve the vampires of the community. He is also told that he will create a history of the community, a bible, a task for which he was chosen due to his credibility as an anthropologist. His efforts to escape fail, and the change in his sons behaviour disturbs him greatly. The arrival of an old guy, Van Mere, seems to give Joe a renewed vigour to rid the community of these vampires and save his son from entering the realms of vampirism. Together they concoct such a plan, but the ability and power of the Judge may prove too much for either of them, and then of course there is the agony faced by Joe as to what he should do about Kathy, not simply a vampire whom he loves, but one who is also with child.....his child!!!
