"There's a terrible presence...it lies to her...it says things only a child can

               understand...using her to restrain the others....."

The Freeling family are just a typical suburban family....dad is a successful salesman for the housing project in which he lives, Diane is the devoted housewife and mother to her two young children, Carol–Anne and Robert, and teenage daughter Dana. When we see Carol–Anne talking to a snowy tv screen we think its simply her imagination...yet her announcement that the 'TV people' are here leads to the beginning of some very strange events. The dog starts barking at the wall, things move across the floor without being pushed and a sinister storm approaches the house.....resulting in the dramatic disappearance of Carol–Anne and the continued movement of household objects. Whilst Carol–Anne may have disappeared her family can still hear her...its like she is still in the house but in a  different dimension.

Not knowing what to do the family enlist the help of a Dr Lesh, a parapsychologist, and her team. They set up their gear at the house and the poltergeist obliges by putting on a fairly decent show. They make contact with the girl but discover there are a collection of spirits with her...and one bad one. They struggle however to bring Carol–Anne back and so enlist further help in the form of a small, strange looking woman who seems to possess far greater powers and knowledge than her parapsychological counterparts. It seems that only she can explain the mysterious goings on, where Carol–Anne is, the danger that she faces and how they can get her back.

Meanwhile all is not as it seems with the extensive property development on the Cuesta Verda site, the place which Mr Freeling has help to build through sales. Can the family get their daughter back, and what are the sinister undertones to all of this paranormal activity???
