The Birds

'I have never known birds of different species to flock together. The very

concept is unimaginable. Why, if that happened, we wouldn't stand a

chance! How could we possibly hope to fight them?'

Melanie Daniels visits a pet shop in San Fransisco in order to pick her her birds. However, the birds have not arrived yet, so she gives the shopkeeper her address. Melanie then meets Mitch Brenner, a lawyer who is looking for a pair of lovebirds to give to his sister. Melanie pretends to be the shopkeeper and unsuccessfully attempts to show Mitch a canary. An amused Mitch reveals that he knows who she is, berates her for being a spoiled rich socialite and leaves. She decides to buy the lovebirds and deliver them to him the next morning at his apartment. Melanie learns that he is spending the weekend at his family home in Bodega Bay, a small coastal fishing town many miles north on the California coast.

Melanie drives to Bodega Bay and is directed to the home of Annie Hayworth, the local school teacher, to learn the name of Mitch's sister Cathy. She then travels across the bay by boat to the Brenner's house and secretly places the caged lovebirds in the living room. Mitch spots her leaving and follows her back to the dock in his truck. As she draws near the pier a seagull swoops down and gashes her forehead. Mitch takes her to the Tides Cafe where he attends to her cut. There she is introduced to Lydia Brenner, Mitch's mother. Melanie dines with Mitch and his family during which Lydia complains that their chickens have not been eating and fears they may be ill. Melanie then rents a room in the town.

It would seem that something has happened to the resident birds as they go on an attacking spree....and things don't improve when Lydia discovers a dead neighbour with his eyes gauged out. Meanwhile a large flock of crows circle the local primary school....and the children are trapped by these ominous looking creatures. The birds are on a killing spree and Melanie, Mitch and Lydia are all under the cosh...and the birds themselves are relentless. What do the birds want??? and why are they behaving in this way??? A classic Hitchcock yarn!!
