Hatchet

Now here on the Mississippi bayou, hundreds of fishermen and old pirates

have lost their lives... and if we're lucky, we might just see their souls floatin'

over the waters where they up and died.

A handful of youngsters looking for a good time/escape are thrown into a world of danger in this homage to the slasher films o the 1970s and 1980s. Ben has just been dumped by his girlfriend and is deeply depressed - he needs cheering up and so his friend Marcus head to the Mardi Gras in New Orleans. Despite the ongoing show of topless women Ben remains unimpressed, and manages to drag his friend on a Haunted Swamp Tour instead. It is down to the master of ceremonies Shawn to guide these two, a handful of other teens and an old couple through a spooky patch of bayou country.

The due meet a pair of bickering exotic dancers, Misty and Genna, and a sleazy man taking footage of them and claiming to be a producer (which he clearly isnt. They also meet the mysterious Mary Beth, who seems reluctant to discuss anything on the initial part of the journey. The tour is originally by bus, but they soon board a barge and head off down swamp. As they pass an eerie looking house Shawn tells the group of the legend of Victor Crowley, a once severely deformed boy who was endlessly taunted by local children. One evining children threw fireworks at the house and it caught fire, leaving Crowley trapped. His father tried in vain to rescue him and took an axe to the door - unfortunately connecing with his sons head in the process. He died...A short while later the boat capsizes and the group have to move onto the shore and return to the city by foot - on Crowley territory.

Of course in true tradition we do not have to wait long for the hatchet to fall - Crowley preys on the victims one by one, picking them off. The group are in dissaray, and it is up to Mary Beth (who has a gun) and Ben to lead the group out of danger. The remainder of the film is simply about Crowley stalking his victims and killing them in gruesome, disturbing ways. Will any of them leave the swamp land in one piece - doubtful!!
