This radio murder mystery series was originally developed by
Radio Station WOR (The mutual broadcasting systems flagship station
in New York) as a 1945 summer replacement for The Shadow. It was syndicated and generally broadcast on Sunday
evenings at 10.30pm. The shows were written by Bob Arthur and David
Kogan, and directed by Jock MacGregor.
The sealed book starred Philip Clarke as the 'keeper of the book,'
a croaking cackling hermit with knowledge of the black arts. Each
week he would unlock the great padlock that kept the sealed book
safe from prying eyes, turn the pages of the book and reveal a spooky
tale. The stories were ones of murder, madness, of dark deeds, strange
and terrible beyond all belief. There were only 26 episodes broadcast,
running from March 18th 1945 until September 9th 1945.
A final point
of note is that many, if not all of these shows, used the Mysterious
Traveller scripts, all be it with different casts and a different
take on the story.
