Fire up the Quattro.

The show opens with DI Alex Drake taking her daughter to school, when she gets a call informing her that one Arthur Layton is holding someone hostage, and will only speak to Drake. She rushes to the scene and is draw out by Layton, who takes her hostage and shoots her in the head. Before we know it Drake has awoken in 1981...in the middle of an undercover operation.  Edward Markham is the man they pick up, the kead in a drug dealership. Alex Drake realises that she is experiencing a similar situation that of a previous colleague...Sam Tyler....whom she has been reading about in 2008.

Drake is told by Gene Hunt that he transferred from Greater Manchester Police a year ago, obviously accompanied by Chris Skelton and Ray Carling. Of course Alex struggles in her new world, firmly believing that she is experiencing some form of delusion in the same way Sam Tyler had. She continues to hear her daughter calling for her (its her birthday) and a mysterious clown like figure that haunts her.....Drake also learns that Sam Tyler lived another seven years in that world, and that he died only last year when his car ended up in a river after chasing criminals.

Drake then begins to focus on Arthur Layton, believing he is the key to her returning to 2008. She asks WPC Granger to dig up all of the information on Leyton, and firmly believes that he is behind the upsurge in drug distribution. The rest of the team believe that Markham is the man they want, yet Layton is still arrested and questioned. He is released by Hunt and Markham is again pulled in, providing the information relating to pick ups/supply etc. Alex goes back to Laytons intent on getting him, and then sets up an uncover operation hoping to link Markham to Leyton. However it goes wrong and Shaz ends up being taken as insurance by Markham. The remainder of the team head down to the docks, where Layton keeps a boat he uses to ship the drugs in. After a gun fight the perpetraitors flee....and Drake comes face to face again with Layton holding a hostage.....of course its left to Hunt to mop up, injuring Layton in the process. However Drake doesn't end up going home....she is staying for a while longer.....
