AGGRESSION REPLACEMENT THERAPY (ART)

   

                                                                                                                              

 

Q: What is the ART  programme?

This programmes is designed to develop the personal, interpersonal and social cognitive skills which are not evident skills that the offender currently possesses. Areas such as impulsivity, and over reliance on aggressive means for achieving goals, poor self control and moral reasoning are targeted by ART, and the programme consists of three separate components: Skills Streaming, Anger Control Training and Moral Reasoning.

 

Q: How did you get on the programme?

  • As a condition of your Community Order, imposed by the Court's.
  • As a condition of your prison licence
  • Your Probation Officer has decided that this is a programme that is right for you, and you are willing to attend and take part in the programme.

 

Q: What will you have to do?

  • You must attend all eighteen group sessions, which works out at two hours per week. There are also six pre and six post programme work sessions to complete with your probation officer.
  • You will be required to sign a contract which outlines the rules and requirements of that programme.
  • If you are unable to attend a programme session you must contact your Probation Officer or a programmes tutor immediately. Failing to attend a programme may mean that you will be returned to Court.
  • To complete work away from the group environment independantly

 

Q: What are the programmes primary aims?

  • To improve an individuals cognitive abilities
  • To increase public protection
  • To challenge individuals to accept responsibility for their offence and its consequences

 

Q: What are the targets of this particular programme?

  • Getting you to think about how you handle situations that may lead to conflict
  • Learn to deal with situations without becoming aggressive/developing anger control techniques
  • To learn a new approach in the way you think and solve problems
  • Using the learned skills to manage emotions

 

Q: Who is suitable?

Both male and females are suitable, who:

  • Those with a history of violent offending
  • Have been assessed as suitable for the programme in a Pre-Sentence Report
  • Offenders who present a medium to high risk to the public

 

Q: Who is not suitable?

  • Those with serious mental health problems
  • Individuals who may not be able to work within a group setting
  • Those who commit instrumental violence such as Domestc Violence or Robbery
