ONE BREATH

I like you, I like her too...I have no wife, no family, some power. Im in the game because                                  I believe that what I am doing is right.

This episode begins in a rather sombre mood - with Mulder telling Scully's mother that they cannot give up on Dana, although she has already brought a memorial plaque for her. However later Mulder receives a call telling him that Scully has been found - and that she is at Georgetown Medical Centre, Washington, and in a critical position. It would appear that no-one can determine how she arrived there, and they are at a loss for any form of prognosis. Mulder turns to his friends at the Lone Gunmen, and according to Scully's medical charts they deduce that there are abnormal protein cells in her blood and that the protein chains are by products of branched DNA - the biological equivalent of silicon microchips. In effect they suggest that whoever was experimenting on Scully has finished with her - her immune system is now decimated and the cells in her blood are nothing more than biological poisons.

Mulder goes back to the hospital and notices a male steal some of Scully's blood left on the side. He gives chase through the corridors and into the basement, where he confronts the male. X appears and shoots the unidentified male - telling Mulder to walk away and never look back.

Back at Scully's bedside the doctor suggests that she will not improve, and that she is effectively dying. There is consideration given to switching off her life support - however Mulder refuses to give up.

Back at FBI HQ Mulder confronts Skinner, who had previously had a meeting with the cigarette smoking man. Skinner asks Mulder about the shooting at the hospital, with Mulder denying any involvement. Mulder tells Skinner that the Cigarette Smoking Man is responsible for Scully position - and he wants to know where he can find him. Skinner yields and Mulder turns up at a shabby single apartment and points his gun at the CSM's head. The CSM tells Mulder that he likes him, he does what he thinks is right and that if people knew what he knew the world would fall apart. Mulder leaves and offers his resignation to Skinner - however Skinner subsequently rips the resignation up and he and Mulder reach a new level of understanding.

X meanwhile delivers a carrot for Mulder - suggesting that if he wants to know who took Scully he would need to be at his flat at a certain time as it will be turned over for incriminating evidence. He provides Mulder with a place ticket - as far as anyone knows Mulder is out of the state. Mulder waits - however a visit from Scully sister leaves him with a dilemma - to get the individual responsible for Scully's abduction or to be at Scully's bedside. She explains to him that she thinks revenge is irrelevant, and that he should rather spend his time saying good bye to Scully on her death bed. However the following day she awakens....he chooses the latter. Scully has opened her eyes and remembers nothing since Duane Barry....
