ANASAZI

The international conspiracy of silence dates back to the 1940s...there is evidence of                                   secrets buried at the Navajo reservation not far from here....

The final episode of season two commences at a Navajo reservation, Two Grey Hills, Mexico. There appears to be some sort of earthquake and the younger son, Eric,  of a three generations of family leaves the family home on his motorbike. He rides along a mountainside and begins digging some of the sand....he has found something. He returns home with some sort of skeletal remains, only to be told by his grandfather that it must be returned. Meanwhile somewhere in Delaware a computer hacker manages to gain access to a highly top secret set of files. At a UN building a call is made to international bodies altering them that someone has broken into highly sensitive documents. At one point the cigarette smoking man is on the end of the phone, and he responds by telling the caller that he has 'already taken care of it.'

Back at Mulders home address in Washington DC the Lone Gunmen inform Mulder that a well known hacker called The Thinker has hacked into the defence department computer system and is a wanted man. When last communicated with the Thinker requested to meet with Mulder, and at the US Botanic Gardens Mulder goes ahead with the meeting. It seems that the Thinker has got his hands on the original defence department UFO intelligence files from the 1940s onwards. Back at FBI HQ Scully enters the office and Mulder tells her that he has hard evidence that the government have known all about extra terrestrial intelligence for the past 50 years - however it is all encrypted. Scully recognises the code as Navajo. Meanwhile Skinner questions Mulder about the missing files, advising him to give them back.

Elsewhere the cigarette smoking man makes a telephone call to an old colleague and says that he has pressing business to discuss...the man in question is Mulders father Bill. The cigarette smoking man tells Bill that his son has the UFO files, and that whilst he has protected Mulder for this long the last thing he needs is a martyr.

Back at Mulders Scully tells him that they know he has the files, and that their jobs are in jeopardy. She then takes the files to the Navajo offices and they struggle to make sense of the code - although they know a man who may be able to help. Mulder meanwhile he pays a visit to his father (at this time his behaviour is becoming extremely erratic and unpredictable). His father says little, other than the word merchandise, before he is shot by an unknown assassin. Meanwhile Scully is also shot at whilst at Mulders flat. Mulder flees, and it seems that everything is pointing at Mulder being framed. Mulder heads back home and is being followed - he manages to face his follower and it turns out to be Krycek. Mulder points a gun at him and states that he killed his father. Scully then arrives and shoots Mulder in the arm, leaving Krycek to escape. When he awakens Scully explains that by killing Krycek it would be very difficult to prove that he did not kill his father. She also tells Mulder that his erratic behaviour was down to her finding that his water had been tampered with, probably with LSD. She tells Mulder that she has found someone who can translate files and who may have something of interest for Mulder, and takes him to the Navajo reservation in Mexico to meet Albert. Scully leaves Mulder at the reservation and returns to Washington.

Albert tells Mulder that in the desert things find a way to survive, secrets are like this too, they push there way up through the sand of deception so men can know them. He goes on to tell Mulder that a tribe of Indians lived here 600 years ago and they were known as the Anasazi, which means ancient aliens. Mulder is then taken out by Eric, the boy on the motorbike at the beginning of the episode, and he is taken to where something is buried. Mulder meanwhile gets a call from the cigarette smoking man, who tells Mulder that his father didn't oppose the project, he authorized it, and that by exposing it he is exposing his own father. Mulder doesn't listen and enters what appears to be a refrigeration car buried under the sand. The hatch is opened and there are alien bodies strewn all over. He calls Scully and is told that the files revealed tests on humans, referred to as merchandise (word said by his father) although Mulder is adamant that these are not humans he is seeing, but aliens. At that point a chopper arrives and Mulder is shut into the unit, with the cigarette smoking man making the order to burn it. The unit goes up in flames and the episode ends.....
