TELIKO

We would like to do some more tests on him. We have to be certain his health hasn't been

endangered and that he isn't endangering others.

A young woman, Mary Lefante goes to a drug store to get a passport photo taken. While waiting for it to develop she returns to her car and finds her boyfriend dead. A hooded man behind her pricks her with something that causes her to pass out. The hooded man grabs her and carries her off. In the drug store her photo develops, revealing it to be full of distortions, with her screaming. Agents Mulder and Scully join the case. No demand has been made from her kidnapper and Scully's initial theory that the photographer may have been involved comes under doubt when they meet him, an elderly drug store owner. The boyfriend was found to have died by having something long and sharp, such as an awl pushed into his ear. Mulder tells Scully about Ted Serios, who was famous for taking thoughtographs, photographs which showed what was in his mind. Mulder takes photos using a camera found in Lefante's apartment and they all appear the same as that taken in the drug store. Mulder thinks whoever kidnapped her was nearby and was stalking her.

Lefante turns up alive, but appears to have been given a lobotomy through the eyes. Another woman, Alice Brandt is kidnapped and awakens bound in a dental chair with her kidnapper branding an ice pick and speaking in German. Mulder returns to Washington to examine the photos and finds no evidence that they were doctored. By examining the photos he finds the face of an old man as well as the shadow of the kidnapper. Scully, finding a construction company referenced at both crime scenes investigates, meeting a man named Gerry Schnauz who worked near both scenes of the kidnapping. When Mulder calls Scully, telling her that the kidnapper's legs were out of proportion in the photo, Schnauz, who is on stilts, runs. Scully chases and catches him. The agents interrogate Schnauz, who was institutionalized in his past for beating his father with an axe handle. Schnauz initially denies kidnapping or murdering anyone, but the old man in the photo is found to be his father, and when questioned on the location of Brandt he claims she is safe from 'the howlers'. Brandt is soon found in the woods, lobotomized. Mulder believes that Schnauz thinks he is rescuing these women from howlers and that the photos show his nightmares.

An officer takes Schnauz's prison photo and it shows the officer dead. Schnauz attacks him seconds later and escapes, although the officer's death is completely different than that showed in the photo. Schnauz robs a nearby drug store, taking cameras, film and an assortment of drug-related materials. When Scully leaves she is pricked by a drug filled needle by Schnauz, who is hiding beneath her car, and passes out. Examining a photo of Scully taken in the drug store Mulder finds it distorted like the other photos. Mulder heads to the dentist office where Schnauz's father used to work and finds the dentist chair missing. Scully awakens bound to a dentist chair with Schnauz claiming he's going to kill the howlers in her head, despite her claims that they don't exist. Schnauz is convinced that what the photos showed were the howlers, and takes a photo of Scully. Mulder has found where Schnauz has her bound, in a trailer, and tries to get in. He is able to get in and shoot Schnauz just before he's about to lobotomize Scully. Mulder looks at the photos Schnauz took, which show him dead.
