TUNGUSKA

          You speak Russian, Krycek?

Agent Scully is brought before the U.S. Senate Select Committee on Intelligence and Terrorism, and refuses to tell them the location of agent Mulder. The narrative flashes back to 10 days earlier where a courier is subject to a search at customs in a Hawaii airport. The customs officer accidently drops a glass canister he was transporting, exposing them to the black oily worms inside that infect the Customs Officer. Scully and Mulder meanwhile are involved with a group of agents going after domestic terrorists. Mulder had an anonymous tipster within the group, which who is soon captured and revealed to be Alex Krycek.

Krycek tells the agents that the terrorists let him out of the missile silo (last seen in the episode "Apocrypha") and that he can help lead them to the conspirators. The agents head to an airport just outside Washington where they try to apprehend a courier carrying a diplomatic pouch from Russia. The courier flees from the agents but drops the pouch, which carries a rock that appears to be a meteorite fragment. Scully sees a Dr. Sacks from NASA who tells her that the rock may have originated on Mars and may contain alien biological matter. Mulder meanwhile brings Krycek to Skinner's high rise apartment where Skinner keeps him handcuffed to the balcony railing. The Cigarette Smoking Man meets with Skinner soon afterwards, demanding to know the location of the rock. The courier that escaped at the airport sneaks into Skinner's apartment but is thrown to his death off the railing by Krycek. Mulder manages to sneak Krycek out just before law enforcement arrives.

Dr. Sacks drills into the rock, but the black oil worms are released from it and infect him. Mulder sees Marita Covarrubias who tells him that the rock originated from near Tunguska. She arranges for Mulder passage to Russia. Mulder initially tries to leave Krycek behind in his car, but brings him along when he finds out he knows Russian. The Cigarette Smoking Man reports to the Well Manicured Man on Mulder's trip to Russia. Shortly after Skinner, Scully and Mulder are subpoenad to appear before a U.S. Senate panel. Mulder and Krycek head through Russia. Mulder believes the rock may have something to do with the explosion that occurred in Tunguska in 1908. The two soon come across a slave labor camp and are captured and thrown in a cell.

Skinner and Scully meet with Senator Sorenson who questions them on the death of the courier and the location of Agent Mulder. Mulder talks with a fellow prisoner who tells them that innocent people have been captured and brought here to be subjected to experiments. Immediately afterwards guards burst into the room and inject Mulder with a syringe. When Mulder awakens he is in a large room bound with chicken wire along with many other prisoner. Black material is dumped onto his face, infecting him with the oily black worms
