    There are incredible security measures in place. We know nothing. They haven't

            told  us a thing.  We saw special forces, health inspectors wearing suits and

                         masks,  and it's not very comforting.

REC revolves around a television reporter, Ángela Vidal, and her cameraman, Pablo, who cover the night shift in one of Barcelona's local fire stations. The firehouse receives a call from an apartment building about an old woman who is trapped in her house. When they arrive, and the firemen and the police break down the door, the old lady is over aggressive and suddenly attacks and bites one of the policemen on the neck. The terrified residents are sheltering down in the entrance hall, and can only watch helplessly as the police and military seal off the building, meaning no one can get in or out. The camera crew is trapped inside, constantly recording the mayhem that ensues. Angela interviews a little girl named Jennifer who lives with her parents and dog in the apartment building. Apparently, Jennifer is ill with tonsilitis, and she says her dog, Max, is at the vet because he is feeling sick.

Suddenly a special force health inspector arrives with a vaccine and attempts to treat the injured policeman and fireman, who suddenly become fiercely vicious and violently insane, despite their critical injuries inflicted on them by the mad old woman. The inspector reveals that yesterday a dog came to the vets with a mysterious illness. It fell into a coma and then suddenly came to and became monstrously ferocious, and attacked and killed the other pets at the clinic. The dog had to be given several injections and then put to sleep. The dog's ownership was traced to the apartment building. Angela remembers Jennifer mention she had a dog and asks if the man animal was named Max. It was. Jennifer's mother is distraught and insists her daughter is simply ill with a common bout of tonsilitis. Before anything else can happen, Jennifer suddenly attacks her mother and goes insane and vicious just like the old woman. The inspector tells the distraught residents that this unknown but virulent disease is infecting people, causing them to turn into bloodthirsty pyschopaths. By the finale Angela and Pablo uncover the horrifying truth of the situation and realize the infection may be more than a mere virus, when they come across reports of a girl in Portugal who was demonically possessed.

As they search the penthouse, Angela and Pablo discover it is owned by a representative from the Vatican charged with the responsibility of exorcising a demon from the young girl. Hundreds of documents and photographs chronicle the life of the young girl and her disappearance (presumably kidnapped by the Vatican). An attic door opens, scaring both Angela and Pablo, and Pablo uses his video camera to search the attic. He is startled by a young boy from the building (now infected) and falls, dropping his video camera and breaking the spotlight. He turns on the night vision to see in the darkness of the penthouse and discovers the sealed door referenced earlier by the representative from the Vatican on an audiotape. It is explained that, failing to engineer a vaccine to biologically assist in the exorcism (and instead creating a mutation that infects others with demonic possession), the representative from the Vatican has abandoned his efforts and sealed the possessed girl in a room before he escapes the city. The girl, now a ghoulishly emaciated figure sustained only by the demonic will of her possession, begins searching the kitchen area, unaware of Angela and Pablo's presence. Pablo tries to escape but trips on something. The demon viciously attacks Pablo who drops the video camera. Angela picks it up and runs away from the demon only to fall on the ground. She crawls on her stomach, searching for the camera, looking directly into the lens but unable to see it in the darkness. As the video camera records Angela's search, the demon appears in the background -- Angela screams as she is dragged into the darkness....
