Land of the Dead |
"They must be destroyed.......there's no time for funeral arrangements"
The films begins with a recap...human corpses were returning to life and feeding on human flesh...and quickly moves on to the present day and a night time supplies raid on a town by a group of people. What we see is a modern day vision of the world where the walking dead roam, yet in this particular raid we see the first glimpses of these creatures evolving–thinking and communicating with each other. For Riley this night is his last raid before he retires and he wants everything to run smooth, yet his second in command, Cholo, has other ideas. The night ends with the death of a soldier and Riley just wanted to get the hell out of the city...yet things just don't go to plan. Whilst the dead roam the living reside behind the walls of a fortified city. However a ruthless bunch of opportunists, headed by Kaufman, have built a huge skyscraper within the walls of the city, a sort of high society which overlooks the dirt and grime of the mass population. Kaufman believes that he created this sanctuary, taking the credit for putting the fences up, training the soldiers and introducing gambling and vice to the population, and so he should choose who enters his high society building – and knocking back Cholo's ideas about gaining a place there is a big mistake. Cholo takes it upon himself to steal Dead Reckoning, the cities largest armor plated defence vehicle that is packed with vast weaponry, which Cholo and his band of men threaten to use on the city. Meanwhile Riley and his sidekick Charlie rescue a woman, Slack, from an underground vice den, and get arrested for their troubles. Kaufman suggests that Reilly take his friends and get his 2 million pound machine back from Cholo...but our hero has other ideas. The zombies, lead by some sinister, 'intelligent undead guy, decide to march through the cities defences and have a bit of a feast on its inhabitants. Will they breach the defences or will Reilly save the day??? Will Kaufman get what he deserves?? An excellent return for Romero and theres certainly potential for a fifth installment.
