BEYOND THE SEA |
Some killers are products of society, some act out past abuses - Boggs kills because he likes it.
We begin with Dana Scully entertaining her parents over the festive period - there seems to be some underlying conflict with father and daughter and Scully seems to be constantly searching for his approval - although we do later learn that he was disappointed she ended up at the FBI rather than in medicine. However her parents leave and Scully falls asleep on the sofa - only to be abruptly awoken by her father, who is sitting on her sofa. The telephone rings and when she answers her mum tells her that her father died of a coronary.....1 hour ago..... Meanwhile just outside Jackson University, Raleigh, California two students are making out in a car. What appears to be a Police Officer at first glance approaches the car and asks the male to get out of the car. After asking to see the Officers ID he is shot, and we learn from Mulder that two nineteen year old students have gone missing. Mulder tells Scully that last year two students went missing in similar circumstances - only to turn up dead a week later. Mulder believes they only have five days to find the kids, and that this pattern represents serial killings. Of course they do have one link, A death row inmate named Luther Lee Boggs, who claims that he is psychic and can lead Mulder to the killer I exchange for a lesser sentence. Boggs tells the agents that he had evaded the death penalty once before, and that as a result of his experiences he had developed psychic abilities which allowed him to channel spirits and demons. Mulder however appears skeptical, suggesting that Boggs was actually orchestrating the kidnapping from inside. He tells Scully that at the age of six Boggs killed every single pet animal he had, and that at thirty he killed five family members before sitting down to watch the game. Boggs tells the agents that the male victim is tied in twine in a cellar, a condemned warehouse - offering a few landmarks surrounding the hideout. He is vague about the whereabouts of the victims, and again Mulder doubts the information. It seems that Scully is persuaded, specifically as Boggs tells her that he can communicate with her deceased father. On her way home Scully notices some of the landmarks described by Boggs, and she investigates a condemned warehouse nearby. She finds traces of the victims being at the place, although a Police search does not result in the finding of the victims. Back at Central prison Mullder attempts to trick Boggs by suggesting the victims had been found - but he sees through it and once again offers a further description as to where the victims are being held. He warns Mulder not to go near a white cross, and when they raid the place the female victim is found and Mulder is shot - near to a white cross. The killer escapes with the male victim. The female victims manages a positive ID of the perpetrator, one Lucas Jackson Henry, who has previous for narcotics and sexual offences. However the agents learn that Henry witnessed a car accident in which his sweetheart died and his mother was decapitated, and that the anniversary of this was looming - was he reliving this event? In a last ditch attempt to find the male Scully lies to Boggs and tells him she has got him a deal, even though she was earlier told this would not happen. He tells Scully that they are at the Blue Devil Brewery, and that she must 'avoid the devil.' Before she leaves Boggs tells her that he knew there was no deal. The victim is rescued and Henry is pursued by Scully before falling to his death in front of an image on the wall - a devil. Scully informs Boggs that she believes he did not orchestrate the killing and that he had also saved her life - however this does not stop his execution in the gas chamber.....
