FALLEN ANGEL

Mulders occasional insubordination is less dangerous than having him exposed                                   to the wrong people

We open in Townsend, Wisconsin, and a local law enforcement officer, Deputy Jason Wright , requesting a fire crew after witnessing a crash and subsequent fire in local woodland. However is radio encounters some form of interference, and as he gets out of the car to investigate he is attacked by some form of invisible being. Meanwhile at a US surveillance centre in Colorado we learn that an unidentified bogey had grounded near Lake Michigan at a speed of over 800 mph, with Colonel Calvin Henderson confirming a 'fallen angel in sector 87' operation Falcon begins immediately....

A local news programme informs the viewer that the immediate evacuation of Townsend's 12,000 population in light of a 'toxic spill' nearby. Mulder has made his way to the scene. He is in the vicinity following information gained from an earlier meeting with Deepthroat, who tells him that the US is surrounded by an electronic fence that reaches 15,000 miles into space, monitoring the 7087 man made objects that orbit the earth. He tells Mulder that the previous evening the fence was breached, and that as a result Operation Falcon went into effect, led by Colonel Henderson, a reclamations expert. He concludes the meeting by telling Mulder that he had 24 hours before the area is sanitised.

Mulder finds himself in the wooded area undercover of darkness, and immediately sees some form of electronic perimeter fence he cannot breach. He sneaks into the camp under an army vehicle and begins to take pictures of the crash site, before being captured by army personnel. He meets with the colonel, who tells Mulder that he has committed a federal crime, and that they are dealing with an ecological disaster. Mulder is incarcerated and meets a fellow prisoner, Max Fenig, a UFO enthusiast who is part of NICAP (National Investigations Committee on Aerial Phenomena). Fenig appears to have been there for the same reasons as \Mulder, suggesting that it is 'Roswell all over again.' The following morning Scully arrives and takes Mulder back to his motel, informing him that he must return to Washington tomorrow for a hearing into his actions. However back at the motel Mulder finds Fenig in his apartment, who tells him that NICAP have been following Mulders career since he moved into the X-Files. Fenig shows the agents his surveillance equipment and plays a recording of Deputy Wright's radio broadcast two nights previous, which leads them to approach Wright's wife at the emergency evacuation station.

Wrights wife offers little information other than her husbands body has not been released. Away from the agents we see soldiers being maimed by this mysterious invisible creature. At the hospital Mulder and Scully speak to Doctor Oppenheim, who tells them that he dealt with the Deputy and three firemen who were admitted two nights ago, all dead on arrival with 5/6th degree burns over 90% of their bodies. Mulder suggests that the injuries could have been caused by ionising radiation, and whilst he makes links to close encounters Scully works closer to home, suggesting similar symptoms resulting from Hiroshima and Ground Zero. At that point the army personnel who were attacked by the being are rushed into the hospital, where Mulder again meets with an irate Colonel Henderson.

Later a larger craft is detected near to Wisconsin, and the alien being, which is on the run from the army, enters Max Fenig's mobile home and seemingly enters his body through his ear. Mulder goes to see Max before he departs for his hearing in Washington - however with Fenig gone and blood on the pillow, and a radio broadcast of an unidentified trespasser at Lake Michigan docks the agents make their way to the scene. On the way Mulder suggests that Fenig was an abductee, after he had seen an incision behind Fenigs ear. At the docks Mulder tracks down Fenig - with the army in hot pursuit. An empty warehouse is surrounded, and with only Mulder and Fenig in the building the army detect three forms inside the structure. The third being approaches Fenig, who is thrown back, and Max appears to levitate surrounded by flashes of light. The door of the warehouse is blown apart and the army, led by Henderson, storm in....only to find Mulder.

Back at FBI HQ Mulders hearing is concluded and it looks as though the X-Files will finally be closed down. However this does not happen, and the chair of the meeting meets with Deepthroat and suggests that this was the best opportunity to get rid of Mulder for good. Deepthroat responds by stating that Mulder's occasional insoburdination is less dangerous than having him exposed to the wrong people, and that whilst we keep ouyr friends close, we keep our enemies closer.....
