During death there is a period of time in which the body is vulnerable.
We begin at Maryland bank - with Scully and agent Jack Willis primed to catch a violent bank robber, Warren Dupre, following information received through an informant. As scheduled Dupre enters the bank and a stand-off ensues between robber and agents - resulting in Willis being shot by Dupre and Scully shooting Dupre. The two are rushed to hospital and whilst Dupre is pronounced dead, Willis is revived....however whilst being resuscitated it is strange that Dupre's body also moves..... 2 days later at Bethesda Naval Hospital Jack Willis opens his eyes and looks at himself strangely in the mirror - almost as if his features are alien to him. He pays a trip to the morgue, cutting of Dupre's fingers and taking his wedding ring - strange behaviour for an agent who has just recovered from a near death experience. Mulder and Scully discuss the actions of Willis - with Scully revealing that he had been chasing Dupre and his partner, Lula Phillips, for almost a year. We learn that Dupre met Phillips whilst she was a serving prisoner and he a prison officer, and that when release din 1993 the two became bank robbers - killing seven people and getting away with thousands of dollars. After disappearing for days Willis resurfaces and tells Scully he wants to find Lula Phillips, and whilst she continues to show concerns for his strange behaviour she agrees to help him. Mulder meanwhile senses that something is wrong, and toys with the idea that Dupre has come back in the body of Willis, and that the change occurred whilst both were flatlining. Willis pays a visit to Lula's brothers flat and asks where Lula is. He believes Tommy was the one who set them up, that he informed the FBI of the planned bank job. He kills Tommy, and when Mulder lifts an incriminating fingerprint from the murder scene later on, Willis has to get rid of the evidence that would lead back to him. In a bid to prove his theory Mulder sets about testing Willis, and after learning of his history with Scully he uses this knowledge - only to find that Willis fails the test. Scully remains unconvinced and maintains that Willis is suffering from nothing more than stress. Later Willis gets a call and learns the whereabouts of Lula, and he takes Scully with him to storm the apartment. He finds Lula and tells her he is Dupre - and whilst she initially struggles to take it all in, the two take Scully hostage and make demands for money from the FBI. Unfortunately for Dupre he does not realise that Willis was a diabetic, and after robbing a local drug store Mulder gets a lead as to Scully's whereabouts. Meanwhile Lula stops Dupre fro taking the insulin - telling him that it was her who set him up. Mulder eventually tracks Scully down and both Lula and Willis die.
